Florescent lights can make an environment feel harsh and unwelcoming. I want there to be as little anxiety around math as possible. This starts with their environment. Having the lamps will hopefully put them at ease and make them feel like they are not a school but at home or in a coffee shop. Taking away this one barrier will help them engage with the material. I teach in Alaska and we have to use lights in the winter frequently. I can't always just open the window to get good lighting for writing.
