One hundred and seventy-five high school juniors spend time in my classroom each day for junior English or AP junior English (AP Lang). With my teacher colleague teams, we want to create a major shift in instruction this year by letting students use choice books alongside traditional whole-class novels. Choice books are exactly that, books chosen by the students. We will use the traditional whole-class novel as a mentor text to then transfer and apply a skill to our choice books, and then create original writing (analysis, argument, creative writing, etc.). Student choice in what they read creates dynamic readers. This is where I need your help. There are so so many great books out there. Books my students already know they want to meet, and some they will discover by flipping through a new-to-them book in class. There is power in discovery. The strongest writers are the students who are readers. It is a magical thing to see a young reader, an elementary school-aged child share with you their excitement, their pride in what they are reading. Younger students have a joy in reading that tends to dissipate sometime in high school, if not earlier. I want to change that. I know that student choice in what they read is a major factor in whether or not they will read. I strongly believe that it isn't that students don't like to read, they just haven't found what it is they like to read. They haven't found their book(s) yet. Student choice and choice books help to develop and strengthen student voice.
