I am looking to switch up my instruction by offering a multitude of choice reading for my students. I want them to become habitual and engaged readers! To do this I need to expand my class library. I have enjoyed combining the expertise from my degree in Communication Studies and my M.A. in English with a Rhetoric specialization to foster relevant critical thinking in my classroom! My goal is not only to develop an appreciation of literature in my students, but to teach them how to develop into avid readers and conscientious consumers. I love a talkative classroom where students are openly exchanging ideas about different topics and themes, and the element of choice in the novels they read plays a large role in this. I would like to offer more variety to my students, but I need your help in making this shift! I am passionate about making updates and changes to my curriculum to fit the needs of my students. My goal is to build to a point where my students are reading a novel of their choosing every two weeks. I will use excerpts from the core texts we would traditionally read, conducting a close read to model the skills I will expect them to transfer to their own choice readings. To be able to do this, we need to build a classroom library with broad range of young adult fiction and non-fiction texts from different genres to pull the diverse interests of my students. I am hoping to cultivate a collection of texts from multiple genres to offer variety and to accommodate all of my classes reading both in class and at home throughout the year. I am unable to do this out-of-pocket, so any help or donations would be greatly appreciated!
