Many of our students benefit from and enjoy hands on activities and are willing to participate whenever they are given the opportunity. We have many enthusiastic learners from kindergarten through fifth grade who like to take an active part in creating a better environment. They are at a good age to learn how to become stewards of their land. As students learn best by seeing and doing, having our own compost bins and composting the fruit and vegetable scraps on a regular basis will help them realize how easy it is to take a small step towards improving their environment. Another benefit of having student involvement in composting activities will help them develop a sense of pride knowing they are doing something good and productive. As a rural school in a high poverty area, we strive for activities which are easily implemented with little cost to families in hopes that knowledge gained by students will be carried home. With bins on the school grounds we can encourage composting.
