A goal of mine is to help students become more interested and engaged through reading. It's imperative that students learn how to think critically and analyze various types of literature. These skills can be used in real world situations. One way to do this is through weekly book clubs. By providing students with relevant literature and multiple options, students will be able to learn about the world through the characters, settings and plots they read about each week. Book clubs also allow students to share their perspectives and knowledge with each other through meaningful discussions. Initially, I plan to introduce these texts to students through a "Book Tasting" activity. Students will have the opportunity to briefly read excerpts from each book and determine whether or not they are interested. The book club groups will be formed on the level of interest each student has about each book. The book club groups will last for two months. Each week, students will decide how much of the book should be read prior to meeting with their groups each Friday. Students will be asked to complete engaging activities each week using the chapters they have read. Students will be able to assume roles within their book clubs; this will encourage students to take ownership of their learning as well. At the end of the second month, the book club groups will rotate books so they can begin a new novel. This project will last the entire school year. It is my hope that this project will have a positive impact on my students and their relationship with novels and reading.
