Orff instruments are ideal for young musicians because they offer an accessible introduction to instrumental music, tonality, scales, pulse/beat, and rhythm. They can be used in an ensemble or solo, and older students may also learn to improvise on these instruments. It is important to choose quality mallets for optimal resonance and clarity of tone. I have found some mallets in the storage closet! However, I am expecting some 20+ students in each class, and will need to have students take turns at the xylophones. The students waiting their turn will be playing other percussion instruments such as drums and shekeres. The headphones will help with a recording project where they will write, compose, make beats, record, and perform their own hip-hop lyrics. The Snark Tuners will be used for a guitar class in the Spring and for a lesson on intonation and the physics of sound.
