The students come from a high poverty community. They attend all grade levels in the Learning Center where I teach at our school--from kinder through fifth grade. They want to do well and learn like everybody else. Often their parents don't speak English, and so they have little to no help at home. They feel proud of themselves when they master a new skill, and then become excited about showing off their work to their parents and other teachers. By third grade, some have given up because they've been told so many times that they don't meet grade level skills and requirements. As they begin achieving reachable goals, their self-esteem rises and they begin to care again about school and learning. I want all our children in the Learning Center to "graduate" and reach grade level status. These kids are our future. It's worth the investment!
