Our physics class is a hands on class. We create a lot of engineering projects that relate to the physics we are learning. These include a homemade speaker, DIY musical instruments, mousetrap car, bottle rockets, catapults, Rube Goldberg machines, and others. I am requesting a 3D printer so my students can join the current world of engineering development, and to enhance our projects! A lot of these projects can include 3D printed parts that enhance the capabilities of the project! A mouse trap car can have 3D printed axles and arms that are stronger and lighter than wood. Homemade speakers that have parts 3D printed in higher temp materials that are also lighter than the normal computer paper we currently use. There are too many possibilities to list about the benefits to a 3D printer in a physics classroom! There are also great advantages to students being introduced to this type of engineering for their future college and career preparation!
