In my rural, newly 1:1 school district, all students are now able to use district-provided devices to complete in-person and virtual schoolwork. I love the opportunity this shift has provided me with to challenge and engage my students! I teach math - and digital literacy- to my students every day by allowing them to explore interactive, online resources like Desmos, by creating and assigning digital activities through platforms like Google Slides and Kami, by virtually assessing and providing immediate feedback to my students via Schoology, Google Forms, and DeltaMath, and by pointing students toward online resources like Khan Academy to use when they are struggling with or reviewing concepts from class. However, because their district-provided laptops don't have touchscreen capabilities, my students still have to show their work using the traditional pencil-paper setup even though they learn and practice math digitally. A classroom set of writing tablets will transform how my students take notes and demonstrate their math knowledge by moving them from strictly pencil-paper work to a digital world that makes my classroom truly paperless! These tablets will turn my students' laptops into full-function devices; students will write their work on the tablets that easily plug into their laptops, and their work will appear instantly on their laptops - no more taking and inserting or uploading pictures of their handwritten work. This will be good for my students' learning, good for the environment, good for saving all of us time, and good for building digital literacy in my students! I have personally experienced how a writing tablet can transform pencil-paper routines into paperless learning experiences, and I cannot wait for my students to have the same opportunity in my classroom!
