If you've ever had a physics class, you've hopefully seen the classic demo of dropping a feather and marble in a tube. First, you have air in the tube and the feather flutters down while the marble drops quickly. Then, you pump out the air with a vacuum pump, and do it again: the feather drops as quickly as the marble! Another classic is to put a ping pong ball in one end of a close-fitting long tube with plastic wrap sealing both ends. Pump air out of the tube, then puncture the plastic behind the ping pong ball -- it shoots out of the "cannon" and destroys a target! Air pressure can be a powerful force! There are myriad exiting demos that require a vacuum pump, and our school does not have one.
