My students are pre-k students in one of the poorest counties in Alabama. The elementary school is pre-k to 6th grade. A majority of their parents are unemployed and some have not completed high school. Some of the students have never attended daycare or any form of school. Some were unable to put on coats, zip/button clothes, tie shoes, or blow their noses. A majority of the students, when they leave school, there is no help at home with school work or reinforcement. My students are eager to learn. When they know they have achieved something they light up and their world becomes a bigger place. You can see how proud they are by their smiles and their eyes shining with joy. The abilities of my students are one half are below level and need lots of assistance, one fourth need some assistance, and one fourth are on level for their ages.
