Students returning to school this fall have dealt with the trauma of COVID-19. They have had to stay indoors and not socialize with their friends (in-person). Students are coming back to school relearning to navigate being in classroom all day by wearing a mask and not having the freedom to move around as they did during online learning. Art is a way to begin the healing process from the trauma of this last year. Bringing in actual artist tools for students to use, gives them a better sense of purpose for the project. There is newness to what they are learning. They begin to see the world with the eye of an artist, they slow down and take time to really look at objects and perspective. All of this encourages creativity and healing as students relax into the art and think solely about the project they are creating. Learning about perspective, lines, shapes, angles, and other art terms changes how students create for other subject areas. They can use the skills learned during art to be better at math because they will be using tools to create shapes, angles, and perspective. They will also use their newfound skills to help with writing. As they deepen their understanding of the world around them, they will transfer that skill into a deeper reflection in their writing. Looking at the patterns they see around them as they look closely and draw are also seen in the patterns of science and math, and they can begin to make deeper connections in their learning. Studies show that when students can draw while they are learning, they remember more than if they only listen. I want to teach my students to see and draw like an artist and then take that knowledge with them through life!
