I distinctly remember my middle school years as a jumping off point in my passion for science. My teachers continuously encouraged me to keep questioning and learning what there is to know. Part of what made my middle school science teachers so effective was their abundance of hands-on work they offered. The curriculum they provided spanned almost all the different scientific disciplines and allowed us to continuously explore. I now take on the responsibility of my past teachers and see myself as the person who will let my students explore such an exciting subject. What I have requested is a wide range of science materials that will enable students to engage, hands-on, with multiple areas of science. Projects like the nursery will allow students to engage in fostering and caring for plants. The idea would be for them to eventually take their plants home after initially caring for them to continue their exploration outside of the classroom. As someone who has come to grow very fond of chemistry, the numerous sets of beakers will allow me to begin designing demos and experiments that could spark future chemists. The atmosphere kits will provide a helpful model that simulates changes in the atmosphere and the impact it has on acidity levels of bodies of water. And lastly, the TFK subscription will give an even broader scope of what is going on in the world around them science or not. Being able to see how the skills they’re learning in school are applied will give greater context to their overall academic goals. Learning science purely in from a book or lecture is not effective. Getting hands on experience with what you’re learning is essential to being a scientist.
