These books will give my students perspective. Understanding Rhetoric's graphic novel format will help readers that struggle with traditional textbook formats make more meaning of the complex skill set in rhetorical analysis, a major component of AP English! This will give them tools to unpack complex texts like Morrison's Song of Solomon: a text that highlights cultural experiences many of my students will not encounter in their everyday lives. In the pandemic, there has been so much opportunity to close off from the world and exist in a bubble; I want to guide my students through the process of joining a multicultural conversation ready to listen and contribute to its growth. Learning how to unpack a text, especially one from another cultural perspective, will give my students a wider worldview and allow them to enter the global society as empathetic citizens. Given the state of the world, it's more important than ever that young people understand the context of a publication: its implications, its messages, and how that information affects their own understanding of a situation.
