These materials will make a huge difference in my science class because the students will be able to create hands-on projects to model their understanding of all three aspects of our curriculum. I will be teaching physical, life, and earth science while integrating the new NGSS standards- specifically "develop and use models". I would love to provide multiple art materials as they are very tactile and can be used to develop multiple models for each science standard. For example, the students would have the opportunity to create a plant or animal cell with their perspective organelles with the felt, construction paper, pipe cleaners, toothpicks, and clay. Then, I would like to use the leftover toothpicks to make molecular models with marshmallows, using the molecular model kit as an example. I would like to use the string to create a food web and demonstrate how energy flows through an ecosystem. Finally, I would love to be able to provide the tin foil, dish soap, vinegar, food coloring, spray paint, and tape for the fun volcano eruption model- this will be especially relevant as we are on Hawai'i Island with many volcanoes to discuss. Overall because of the lacking state of our materials, this project would allow amazing opportunities for the students to collaborate, grow, and develop their interest in science.
