Many of my students come from low-income households and do not have access to many learning resources outside of school. These materials provide students with a basic set of skills to help them navigate social-emotional issues through reading. Due to a lack of resources, the students' classroom library does not contain books that many of us grew up loving to read. How can we expect young students to be intrinsically motivated to read, when we can't provide the necessary environment to develop that love? With the addition of these books to our library, my goal is to provide the resources needed for students to grow a love for reading in my classroom so that they are able to continue to develop their will to learn overall. Through reading, my students will be able to navigate new worlds within the stories, learn about something new in an informational text, or read something that resonates with them in a poem. I would also like to give my students more flexible seating and a rug so that when it is time for individual reading time, students will have their own reading areas to limit distractions within the classroom and also to provide a greater sense of comfort while reading. I would really like to provide more anchor charts for students to refer to while reading and writing in my classroom. I also will be using the chart paper to create a "Book of the Week" section in my classroom to continue to motivate students to read outside of the classroom. This section will be used to tell the title and author of the book, as well as how many points each book is worth for their class reading goals. Using these materials, my mission is to get kids excited about reading again!
