Our school is new. We opened last year during COVID, doing whatever we could to keep our students in a face-to-face rather than an online learning environment. There were many programs we wanted to implement that could not happen. One of these was recycling. Local recycling centers were closed which made it difficult to implement the program. Students and staff both desire to have an extensive recycling program. Over the next few years, we will be composting for our gardens, building a greenhouse and growing vegetables with aquaculture for our students' lunches. We are looking to become less dependent on disposable plastics and reduce the amount of waste paper. Earlier in the year we asked the students what community project they would like to begin. Waste is an issue students were concerned about the most, specifically recyclable waste. The last few months of school we re-used cardboard shipping boxes to collect recyclables. However, we would like to make the recycling program more student-friendly and have a uniform, highly visible recycle center in each classroom. Students will be keeping track of the amount of waste the school produces each week. Different grade levels will have different responsibilities on maintaining the recycling and garbage program. Students will, by the end of the year, have a solid understanding of how their consumer habits affect the amount of waste produced by a community.
