A classroom carpet and listening station may seem like standard materials in most school districts. In our district, these are luxuries. Providing the classroom carpet will allow us to build community as we share during morning meeting and end our day on a positive note in closing circle. Picture students working in pairs, groups, or individually, on a clean, warm, carpet instead of the cold tile floor. Listening builds oral vocabulary, which in turn builds reading and writing skills. Repeated reading builds fluency. I have a collection of books on CD but no way for more than one student to share at a time. I choose MP3 and usb access so that students can listen to material I have recorded or imported.
