My students are 3-5 graders of African and Latin descent, who attend school despite facing the ills of poverty. Many of them come from single parent homes, in which their sole parent works 2 or 3 jobs. Many come from homes that receive welfare. 85% of our school qualifies for free or reduced lunch. They attend a school district that often does not have the resources necessary to educate all of them. Teachers are frequently asked to copy 1 textbook for their classes of 30 students or to purchase books with their own money. The school band itself survives off of student and teacher contributions, as it receives no funds from the school. Despite these conditions, the children of the Wyandanch Union Free School District are a shining example of what is possible with a positive attitude and an unbroken spirit.
