Since I began teaching in Post-Katrina New Orleans in 2007, I have been working with collectively traumatized communities, families, and students. This created in me an interest in the science of learning and the neuroscience of brain development. When there are gaps or interruptions in typical development our brains don't move past it, they get stuck. This project, these supplies, will allow children at all stages of development to regulate the movement needs of their brain while they learn to grow academically. As they move past the basic needs of their nervous system using the items in this list, they will have more access to developing executive functioning skills. According to Harvard medical school "executive functioning skills in young children are skills that help us focus, plan, prioritize, work toward goals, self regulate behaviors and emotions, adapt to new and unexpected situations, and ultimately engage in abstract thinking and planning". Children will learn to choose the seating that will help them focus. During some large group instruction and during individual work time I want to offer options for them. Imagine being asked to sit on a carpet for 30 minutes and not lose focus, it's a tough job for children AND adults. Early 2020 I began experimenting with alternative seating and it was amazing. The children had turns to try every modality and eventually regulated their own needs throughout the day. I am excited to offer more meaningful options and address development gaps for increased academic gains.
