This is THE place where the class comes together to create a classroom culture and build community. We follow the principles of the Responsive Classroom model; a model that builds a community that CARES = Cooperation, Assertion, Responsibility, Empathy, and Self-Control. The philosophy includes frequent opportunities for students to gather altogether to discuss and engage in their learning, resolve conflicts, share experiences and problem-solve. This large area rug will serve as the perfect place for holding daily Morning Meetings, Read-Alouds, Whole-Group Lessons, and Closing Circles. The rug serves as the meeting location - a comfortable rug makes it easier for everyone to feel warmly welcome. Sitting on the floor is comfortable for students, less distracting and faster to transition to than sitting in chairs. This particular rug is a nice, soft, grey color - it is neutral and not too busy and distracting which is essential for creating a calm environment. Those cheerful, colorful poly-vinyl spots? Those help students visually motor plan where and how far apart to sit and help minimize conflicts about where to sit. In our class there is the teacher (that's me) and two assistant teachers. We like to sit as low to the ground as possible but still be able to move quickly from student to student - the rolling stools will help us be part of the circle in this way. They are low-profile and do not look foreboding and throne-like - we want our students to feel that we are all in this together. We'd love to just sit on the floor but we are much older than our students with creaky knees and achy backs so a low stool is the perfect choice for us. The casters allow us the flexibility to use these stools throughout other areas of the classroom.
