The students I was blessed enough to teach the past year came to me eager to learn, but reluctant to read. I had students across multiple different reading levels, with most between kindergarten to second grade. As a fourth grade teacher, this was a huge concern for me. The books for my project have been chosen meticulously; I requested books that suited multiple different reading levels, that were also full of culturally rich material with which my students could relate. This was so important to me as I know students are more likely to get into a book where the protagonist looks like them. I'm so thankful for the resources that are available today to make this a reality for my students. The books will stay inside the classroom for safe keeping. However, we will do book studies that the students can complete from home and school. As a fourth grade reading teacher, I was exposed to many disheartening statistics this past school year. Students who don't reach their reading level by 4th grade have a much higher percentage of dropping out than students on their reading level. With your help, we can make a change in these students' lives to benefit them for years to come. Frederick Douglas said, "Once you learn to read, you will be forever free." These students deserve to read freely, without barrier or limitation. A classroom library is an incredible first step moving toward this goal.
