The Kindergarteners at my school are very energetic and very passionate about learning. However, due to high poverty rates and many other issues, they often come to school with limited experiences and also lack communication skills needed to express themselves openly. They often get very frustrated because they have ideas, or want to express themselves, but don't know where to begin, and therefore they either act out or shut down. They often come to school with very chaotic home lives in the back of their minds, and they are expected to just jump into the learning process overwhelmed with feelings and situations that they can't explain. They need an area to "escape" to, that reinforces that their feelings are natural and teaches them positive ways to deal with all types of situations. And when they are finished they can jump back into the class activities more equipped and ready to learn!
