As with many Title I schools, we have limited resources. In addition, many of our students struggle with accessing online resources due to financial constraints or lack of availability in their area. It is often suggested that we use digital copies of the books that we read in class. However, by acquiring individual copies of the books, we ensure that students are being given equal opportunities at school and at home. In addition, we are able to reduce the amount of screen time students are getting, allow them to stay focused, assign homework, and ensure that even if they forget their PC at home, they can still engage in the lesson. It is a special thing to a child to have ownership of a book! Novel studies allow students to learn new vocabulary and experience different genres. They also give students ideas for creative writing of their own.
