The use of "rug time" is essential in the first-grade classroom. During the practice of social distancing within the classroom setting last year, all rugs had to be removed and students were required to remain at their tables for instruction. This proved to be ineffective and difficult for the first-grade students whose attention was already limited. The large classroom rug will be used for all whole-group mini-lessons in the subjects of reading, writing, phonics, and math. It will also provide us with a space for focused read alouds and whiteboard practice. The small rugs will be used to provide a comfortable, individual space where students can read and apply concepts taught in the whole group mini-lessons. By donating to our project, you will provide my students with both a collective space to promote learning, focus, a sense of classroom community, and individual spaces to promote independent practice and concept application. My first-grade students will be able to receive instruction in a comfortable space which also allows me to monitor student engagement more easily. My students will also be able to select a comfortable space within the classroom which will allow them to develop a sense of independence while learning/applying. This project will be essential to having my students "return to the rug"!
