Flexible seating is a way that teachers can address the needs of individual students in the classroom by allowing the students to learn in a setup that works best for them. Currently, during independent work time, my students are able to work at a regular table, at a tall table with stools, at one of two easy chairs, or on the floor using a clipboard. I would love to be able to give my students some more options so that they can still collaborate while being comfortable and focused. These new seating options will play a large role in the attention, focus, collaboration, and comfort of our classroom community. The tractor seats allow for movement and make partnering and grouping very easy. They are great for students who tend to fidget as they are able to roll and swivel without it being a distraction. The bar-style stools allow the students to work at a higher table and to communicate more effectively as they can encourage students to turn, stand up, and move around more often. The round ottomans are great for a softer seat and again allow for more efficient collaboration among the students. They can even help with student posture and development too! Lastly, research has shown that wobble cushions can improve core strength, posture, concentration, and balance. These are great for the students that just need to get those wiggles out, as they allow for movement while improving focus. With the limited flexible seating options that I currently have, I have already seen increases in student motivation, collaboration, and attention. I hope that with these additional options, my students and I will see even more growth in these areas.
