We are a classroom with varying abilities and different backgrounds. I would like to build my classroom library on the basis of diversity, multiculturalism, and acceptance. With these books, I will do read alouds and lessons/discussions about the content of the book. I want to use literature to help my students speak freely, think deeply, and appreciate each other's differences. Every child should have self-worth, and children need to see themselves, their families, their neighborhoods, and friends represented in the literature around them. When a child sees themselves or family/friends in literature, it builds confidence and self-worth. I want every child in my class to be represented in my library! I want them to see book characters like themselves or books that are written by authors like themselves. I want them to learn through reading that the world is made up of many different people, all of whom contribute in some important way.
