My diverse classroom includes indigenous, Latinx, black, Asian, Indian, bi-racial, immigrant, multilingual, trans, and queer students. However, our current 10th grade curriculum is overrun by 100-year-old books by white authors. If I want to teach about the black experience, I can only use Joseph Conrad's Heart of Darkness, which includes racist and highly problematic depictions of native Africans. If I want to discuss disability the only text to use is John Steinbeck's Of Mice and Men in which the only disabled character is murdered and this is presented as a necessity. If I want to teach about the Latinx experience, Asian experience, or Indigenous experience there are no texts to choose from. None of these texts have any queer or trans characters. We need books that accurately reflect the students and their experiences. I received a PTSA grant to help fund this project but it will only cover 54 books and we need 100 books total. These books will empower students to consider different perspectives and also find value in their own cultural experience. In addition, these texts not only reflect what it is like to be black or trans or queer, but also include examples of healthy relationships, black joy, queer joy, and family acceptance. While these books are realistic, they are also uplifting and positive.
