The materials and supplies that I am requesting for my students already have a "home." In other words, I know exactly where everything will go. We just need your help in getting everything through our door! Each classroom will be blessed with a designated self-regulation or calming corner to help students learn how to self-regulate. Elementary students need to learn that all emotions are valid, and they have the power to reset their minds. Students who learn to regulate their emotions are more likely to be successful academically. Creating a designated area to give a student a break in the classroom will ensure the student is not missing classroom instruction. This project will meet the needs of 100% of the students and be available to all students and will not be punitive. When the project is ready for take off, all students will be introduced to the area in their classroom and have the chance to try the station out. Teachers will model how the station should be used. Self-regulation is not only for emotional matters but also cognitive ability. Students who are unable to regulate emotions will have a difficult time grasping new educational material and goals. Teaching mindfulness and self-regulation at a young age will help the cognitive and emotional parts of the brain grow stronger.
