In this high school geometry project, students will design a tin man using the required 3D shapes and parameters given. The students will calculate the surface area and volume of their entire tin man and then build it. They will receive a cardboard box, 2 pieces of poster board and all the tape and glue they need. Students will then cover their tin man with the amount of aluminum foil they calculated. Their tin man must be between 90 and 110 cm and be able to stand on its own. Students will learn how to navigate the design process, collaborate with a partner, and the CCSS geometry standards involving 3D solids. The best design will be voted on by teachers.
