My small group area where we work mostly on phonics and practice reading strategies needs a whiteboard for me to help students as they build words. This will be an area where I will be able to magnetically attach common consonant blends, digraphs, glued sounds, etc. so that students can reference these as we learn. I will be able to write our learning objective on the board so they can see and remember what our focus is that day, such as reading with expression or making connections to the text. First graders need to have easy access to reference materials that I can point to as I teach. If I have to pull out a binder or loose posters during small group, something so simple could distract them, or give them opportunity to get lost in their thoughts about what's for lunch or wondering how their new puppy is doing at home. By having a large whiteboard on the wall right there at our small group area, I will be able to talk about the reference cards as I am teaching and they will all be able to see them well without skipping a beat!
