Ice is the school nurse's best friend. Whether it is treating a small injury or attempting to reduce inflammation for a more serious injury, ice is frequently administered at school each day. The Nurse's office is in need of an ice maker machine. Currently, I am freezing sponges to treat injured students because ice is not available in the office area of the school. The sponges have been successful but some injuries require a colder compression application to suppress injury swelling and reduce pain. In addition to the countertop ice maker, I am requesting emesis bags. These bags are similar to the bags used in hospitals when a patient is sick in bed. Frequently I escort a vomiting child to the health office with a large classroom trash can under his/her chin to prevent vomiting in the hallways. Emesis bags would be much more pleasant for our students during such an uncomfortable walk to the office; plus, the emesis bags can be sent home with the student so that they do not get sick in the parent's car.
