Do you remember playing card games as a child? I remember playing rummy, war and even Canasta with my grandmother. Experiences with playing cards build and help maintain number sense. Our students, like many others, like to spend their time at home playing electronic games and many do not have the card game experiences that we had. In my classroom, we play card games that target math skills, but are so fun! The students come in to class so eager to play. I have watched them increase and improve their skills through these games. We would like to send every one of our 574 Kindergarten-4th grade students home this summer with a new deck of cards and instructions for grade appropriate games to maintain and increase their number sense! Families can learn to play the games their student has learned at school. We are excited that our project will give families quality time together and support our students' math skills!
