My students live in Tennessee and attend a Title One School. I have 18 wonderful and sociable first graders. The class consist of 9 girls and 9 boys. They range from various levels academically. Somehow, each student has made progress last semester in reading and literacy skills. When school first started last year, I can remember how my lowest reading group had problems with two or three letter words. As the semester progressed, I started seeing how they used their phonemic awareness and phonic skills to assist them in sounding out words. Some of these students are still struggling readers but I am proud of how they have improved. My middle and high reading group is doing fantastic! They can read on the carpet and help my struggling readers. My students are very independent because they are beginning to have ownership of their learning. When some of my students complete their work, they will take a book out and read at their seats or on the carpet without disturbing their peers.
