Augmentative & Alternative Communication (AAC) includes different methods, devices and strategies that individuals with speech and language impairments use to effectively communicate their wants, needs, and ideas. Tablets, such as iPads, are becoming increasingly more common in high-tech AAC because they are more affordable than traditional AAC devices. Through the use of iPads, I am able to use an evidence-based AAC system called Language Acquisition through Motor Planning (LAMP) Words for Life. LAMP Words for Life is strategically structured to support early success and encourage natural vocabulary development. It provides non-verbal individuals a way to develop independent and spontaneous communication through naturalistic exchanges. I plan to use LAMP Words for Life in my preschool classroom to support and encourage independent communication. By donating to this project, you will enable preschool children with autism and other developmental disabilities to independently communicate their wants, needs, and ideas. Children need to experience communication in natural contexts. They learn language through watching and hearing others around them. Non-verbal children need to see other people around them using the same AAC system they are learning. I strive to encourage naturalistic exchanges with peers, school staff and family members. Through the use of LAMP Words for Life on iPads, we will be able to model naturalistic communication exchanges with peers and adults so our students will become effective communicators.
