Imagine taking a science class online with no labs or any materials to practice what you learn. Now, imagine a science teacher, desperately trying to teach her virtual students online providing examples and demos of as much stuff as she can with limited materials. This has become a regular occurrence for us. Showing my students real world applications of what I am teaching is paramount to their learning and engagement! Sure, I can explain the difference between a plant and animal cell until I am blue in the face. But, what if I had the opportunity to take one of my own cheek cells and a piece of an onion to show them the differences? That would be AMAZING!! Having a microscope with the ability to hook up to my computer will allow my students to be able see "real" cells and understand that there really are differences. It would also provide a great opportunity for questions and exploration! You want to see the difference between human hair and animal hair? Sure, let's take a look! Why do we lower a coverslip on a slide at an angle to prevent air bubbles? Here, let me show you! These experiences just aren't the same if they don't actually get to see it for themselves.
