Almost 3 years ago the library participated in an Embryo and Incubation Project. We were quite successful and hatched almost 2 dozen chickens, which the students fell in love with instantly. As the librarian, I also noticed how just watching chickens walk and peck at the ground had a calming and positive effect on our students and teachers. Something about holding a chicken or just sitting watching them opened up our most closed and conflicted students. Teachers came after school to sit and told me stories of their childhood growing up in Mexico. I knew then that I had to find a way to keep some of our girls and so we started a student Farm Club and built a coop and pen to keep our girls. Our students care for the chickens during the school day in teams, morning and afternoon, and again for Farm Club activities. It's been quite a wonderful opportunity but there has always been one thing missing. We have always needed a place for our students to sit and watch the chickens during their recess. I also noticed that the chickens have a "community following" with our neighbors visiting with their dogs, children, grandchildren, and even their older parents throughout the day, evenings, and weekends. I just know that a bench to sit and talk with the chickens would be so appreciated and used by our students and community. It would be a safe place, just like the students and teachers found the library to be when the girls were little. It would be the best buddy bench ever- because it would be sharing the space with our chickens.
