The historical fiction book "Chains" will enhance my Social Studies unit on the Revolutionary War, through the unique perspective of a young slave girl. Best practices suggest that it is critical to use literature to supplement study, as it engages students in the lives and stories of others and it fosters a sense of empathy and higher-level understanding of the human experience. Through this story, you can expect to see in my classroom, collaborative conversations on injustice and equity and students writing about natural human rights and the Declaration of Independence.
