At the end of the 2020-2021 school year, students will have spent ¾ of the school year distance learning. It’s undetermined what learning gaps my students will have when we return for the 2021-2022 school year. That’s why, for this campaign, I would love to be able to buy a year’s subscription to Storyworks, SuperScience, and DynaMath for my class. Storyworks has a variety of high interest stories that range from non-fiction, fiction, poetry, plays, and debates. Storyworks comes almost monthly in a magazine style format with digital access. Since the stories in Storyworks are high interest, students are excited to read the material and use the material for the integrated writing activities. Storyworks does a wonderful job aligning their stories and writing pieces with common core standards that highlight how the standards are used in a practical world setting. Our science curriculum is a good supplemental tool, but was copyrighted in 2005 and is outdated. Super Science offers students real-world science adventures through a variety of current science based articles highlighting different forms of science from life to earth to engineering. Super Science provides hands-on activity ideas that supplement the information in the articles, as well as, digital access for students to play interactive science games. One of the areas that I’m greatly concerned with is math. Next year, I predict that several students will need intense math intervention. Through attention grabbing articles, DynaMath shows students how the math skills they’re learning in the classroom apply to everyday real-life. Connecting math skills to real-life applications, students make sense of the lessons being taught in the classroom and gives them ownership of their learning.
