The Spanish texts you donate will help our school's English Language Learners in several ways. By helping to strengthen their first language literacy skills, you'll be increasing their ability to acquire English proficiency. There is substantial research to indicate that literacy in one language promotes literacy in additional languages, particularly for Spanish and English which have similar orthographies. You'll also be providing these learners with texts to scaffold their learning while acquiring English. For example, my class is reading The One and Only Ivan. My Spanish-speaking first language students would benefit greatly from hearing this book read to them in their first language as well as in English. Similarly, the informational texts on the list would provide them with vocabulary and information related to elementary science standards in their first language. This will provide an invaluable "hook" to help them interpret the content and make the curriculum more accessible. Perhaps most importantly, you will be providing their families with the books needed to engage in literacy activities together and a pathway to participate in their children's academic lives.
