The novel "The Broken Blade" by William Durbin, a Minnesota author, showcases the journey of a young voyageur in Minnesota during the 1800s. A thirteen-year-old boy joins the trade, paddling 2,400 miles to Grand Portage to support his family. This novel makes the history, hardships, and details of Minnesota history relatable to middle school readers. Literature makes the voyage come alive, as students are able to imagine themselves as the character, experiencing the details they learned about in social studies. After we read the book, students will be making another connection, this time to our STEM program. They will be designing a theme park featuring details of the fur trade, character experiences, and Minnesota history.
