As a new kindergarten teacher in the midst of a pandemic, I was blessed with 25 passionate, outgoing, and fun 5- and 6-year-olds. Due to the pandemic, we are not able to touch and share as much as we normally would. This makes having hands-on practice with things difficult. In asking for these donations, I am ultimately asking to for your help to build engaged and enthusiastic learners that are ready to take on the challenges they will face through school and be confident while doing so. I am asking for two things: Teachers Pay Teachers gift cards and Unifix Cubes. I believe both of these things will encourage my students and help me to become a better teacher. When I started teaching, I realized how necessary, valuable, and expensive Unifix Cubes are. They can be used to help teach so many different things from addition and subtraction to building words. I can find so many things to use the Unifix Cubes for to make my learning environment fun for the students while also keeping them separated by allowing students to have their own sets. Another thing I did not realize when accepting a job to teach kindergarten is how much they will read and write. I quickly learned that I did not feel as prepared as I wanted to for these eager 5- and 6-year-old students. I want them to know that I am confident in my teaching and abilities so that they will feel confident in theirs. The resources I will use if I get the gift cards will be fun, engaging, and interactive resources focused primarily on comprehension, sight word knowledge, and writing as these are all important factors in teaching a child to read fluently.
