Our wood shop classes are large, which means students spend much of their class time waiting for their turn to use our under-supplied power tools. Students only get a couple of hours of shop time each week. More tools would mean that each child can be more productive and creative with their precious time. It is important for our students to learn that vocational disciplines like construction and woodworking are respectable and needed. The goal for my class is to foster that understanding, and maximizing the time students spend with a tool in their hands is crucial to meeting that end. The most urgently needed tools are additional disk sanders as they are used for every project. My students are learning life-long skills that will help them to feel empowered and independent both in their homes and vocations. Learning to rely on their own hands to fix, create, and maintain will be exponentially improved with adequately supplied tools.
