My students elected to be a part of the technology department offered at my school. Our student population is made up of at-risk youth who have previously dropped out of high school. Our school welcomes young adults, ages 18-21, into our yearlong program that focuses on academics, vocational training, leadership, and civic engagement. While working towards their diploma, they serve as part time AmeriCorps members. In the technology department, we prepare our students for careers in the advancing world of technology through certifications, refurbishing, and overall digital literacy. I teach a photography and yearbook elective class to offer the students a creative outlet while learning about the technology of photography and design. Some students have been out of school for 3 or 4 years and never imagined being high school graduates. This year is more than receiving a diploma; it’s about making a complete life transformation. Our school is a key stepping stone on their path to success.
