The Reading Buddies Program is a familiar idea brought to you in a new way. A reading buddy program is an excellent way to address the learning needs of both younger and older children. However, due to COVID, we will not feature the normal cross-age tutoring and partnerships this year. With the new idea, we will substitute the “buddy” with a stuffed “pet” allowing students timed practice for improving their reading and fluency skills. Students will be able to adopt a pet of their choice to read to daily. Students will receive a contract stating their intent to read with and properly care for the chosen adopted pet. Students can choose books from the Reading Buddies Program selection as well as read favorites from their homes. Additionally, students will receive a reading log to list all of the books they have read to their pet. We are currently working on a grant for additional books for the students to take home. Once the log is completed, students will receive another log and a small token to reward their hard work in the area of reading!
