We use literature as both a lens into the world outside us and as a mirror to reflect our own experiences. I would like to ensure that my classroom library provides a multicultural and diverse range of literature to help my students identify with and learn about a variety of cultures and heritage. I strongly believe that reading and learning about the experiences of others helps students become more empathetic and understanding. We are requesting books to provide my students opportunities to read and experience a variety of literature that represents diverse cultures and heritage and highlights the universality of the human experience. It is my goal to stock a classroom library with books that showcase characters and stories of and by people of color. These books will help my students explore both who they are themselves and help them understand the world around them. This will encourage students to gain a broader world view and increase empathy.
