The items in our project are designed for life skills lessons with our students. We will use them in daily lessons and these lessons will culminate in one or more trips for our students. Lessons will begin in the classroom, teaching our students life skills, and expand to social-emotional learning, teamwork, exercise, and communication skills. For example, we plan to start by showing students how to plan and cook a meal outdoors using the camping equipment. They will learn to look at recipes, budget, shop, and prepare the food outside in "practice" meals. We will use our exercise time by taking advantage of the river just blocks away from the school, and students will learn how to portage, operate a kayak safely, and help each other. These and many other daily lessons will culminate in one or more camping trips where students can unplug, communicate, have fun, and experience activities that they can carry with them the rest of their lives.
