In Developmental Kindergarten one of the most important aspects of school is to have hands-on learning opportunities. This is especially important because students at this age are still trying to make sense of the world around them. These students need to experience learning in a variety of ways which include using their senses and including movement. This is especially important for the 35 DK students that I am teaching "Virtually" due to the Covid Pandemic. My goal is to give those students whose parents have chosen a virtual program due to Covid/having a child with medical needs the same educational experiences as students whose parents have chosen face-to-face instruction. Students will receive soil, seeds, containers, journals, baggies, and a magnifying glass in order to learn how/what plants need to grow. Students will be able to dig their hands into the soil and place in a clear container to be able to watch and observe the growing cycle of a plant. The students will have choice in the kind/type of seed they place in that soil. They can use the magnifying glass to get a close up view of the tiny root hairs growing or the fragile baby plant when it emerges from the soil. This will all be documented in their journal through pictures, a letter, a word, or a sentence as DK'ers are at all different stages in their learning. We will gather each day online and share in "plant conversation" increasing their oral language skills, and using the plant life cycle model to increase the engagement of the lesson, and to use as a reference. By donating to this project, you will help many students experience the type of learning that is essential and important in keeping them engaged, learning, and having fun, too!
