Resilience is typically understood as the ability to bounce back from adversity. The American Psychological Association defines resilience as “the process of adapting well in the face of adversity, trauma, tragedy, threats, or even significant sources of threat.” This year, Humanities teachers at or school are initiating a summer reading program designed to foster a love (or like) of reading, demonstrate that all Eagles (students, teachers, and staff) are committed to creating a strong reading community at our school, and promote an openness and a willingness to deal with difficult topics like inequity, prejudice, and discrimination. Our teachers, along with several members of tour administrative team, have been asked to commit to reading one of the books on a carefully selected list over the summer. All students will be required to read one book from the same list. Students will be asked to look at the list and provide teachers with their top three book choices and will be given a copy of the book on the last day of school. While reading, students will be required to answer guided questions about their reading. Upon returning to school in the fall (specific date TBD), team teachers and several staff members will guide a book discussion with the students who read the same book. Students will receive a grade for reading the book, completing the guided questions, and for participating in the book discussion. Our team budgets are tapped at this point in the school year. We would love your support in helping us fund this summer reading experience. We feel passionately that by focusing on the theme of resilience, our students will be better equipped for our return to a full building in the fall of 2021.
