My music appreciation students are eager to learn how to read music, understand the history and techniques of music, and engage with music in fun ways. While reading and clapping rhythms is a good start, playing instruments is infinitely better! With bucket drums, my students will put their skills into practice on instruments, learning to read, compose, and arrange rhythms for their favorite pop songs. This will allow students to connect what they're learning in the classroom to their everyday lives, which is essential for engagement and helps transfer of learning. Bucket drumming will also allow our class to combine kinesthetic, aural, and visual modalities, reaching the maximum number of learners possible and engaging both sides of the brain. These inexpensive, yet fun and meaningful instruments will make a difference in the music classrooms of Capitol Hill High School for years to come.
